Asha's Workshops
Elementals: The Stories of Mother Earth
Friday 1:00-3:00pm $45 in advance, $50 at the door We will begin by moving differently through a combination while defining what each of the elements (earth, air, fire, and water) mean. Then, using movement vocabulary, we will tell the story of Mother Earth and the different catastrophes caused by the 4 major elements. Strike a Pose Saturday 3:30-5:30pm $45 pre-reg, $50 at the door Sometimes pauses can give just as much of a “wow” moment that a big “hard” move gives, but how do we go about utilizing it and how can we connect it to the structure of the choreography as a whole? Drawing from the theatrical elements of Bharatanatyam we will explore material that dancers can use to seamlessly tell their stories in their choreography without having to do “difficult” movements. |
Asha's Bio
Dancing since the age of 5 in a mother/daughter Middle Eastern dance class ignited Aha's passion for dance. She later began training in Bharatanatyam under the direction of Smt. Hema Rajagopalan at the age of 8 with the Natya Dance Theatre Academy. As a member of the Natya Dance Theatre Company, she has performed at renowned venues such as The Harris Theater, The Field Museum of Natural History, The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, The Pritzker Pavillion, and McCormick Place to name a few. She has performed at community outreach programs promoting dance heritage and education throughout the Chicagoland area. Asha has also been in several productions, some of which include an excerpt from Race to the Bottom, Jewel, Sita Ram, and, more recently, The Flowering Tree and Varna. In August, 2014 Asha completed her Arangetram representing her ascension to the stage as a solo artist. She has performed internationally both as a part of Natya Dance Theatre and as a soloist, with a strong focus on growing her choreographic skills.
While pursuing a bachelor’s in Exercise Science from Loyola University Chicago, Asha has been teaching with Natya Dance Theatre and After School Matters working with children on dance technique, choreography and body dynamics. Drawing from a family history rich in music and dance, Asha also strengthens her artistic spectrum to include singing and several musical instruments including Piano, Guitar and Percussion. With her multi-cultural background, Asha brings harmony and unity to the stage through dance and inspires audiences to see beauty through her artistry.
